MOVING CHECKLIST

Preparing for Your Move

Eight weeks before you move:

[ ] Begin an inventory of all household goods. Decide what to keep.

[ ] Obtain estimates from several moving companies.

[ ] Establish a file for all moving papers and receipts.

Seven weeks before you move:

[ ] Choose your mover.

[ ] Ask your doctor for help finding good health-care professionals in your new location.

Six weeks before you move:

[ ] Fill out post-office change-of-address cards.

[ ] Send your new address to insurance agents, charge-account and credit-card companies, publications you subscribe to, relatives and friends.

Five weeks before you move:

[ ] If moving yourself, reserve truck or trailer.

[ ] Hold garage sale. Donate unsold items to charity or sell to second-hand stores.

[ ] Ask seller for a floor plan of your new house. Recruit the entire family to help plan furniture arrangement.

Four weeks before you move:

[ ] If you're doing the packing, get started.

[ ] If the mover is going to pack, arrange for it to be done two days before loading.

[ ] Send furniture, drapes and carpets for repair or cleaning.

[ ] Begin to use up overstocks of staple foods.

[ ] Collect valuable personal papers. Get copies of family medical records, children's school records and birth certificates.

[ ] Make travel plans and motel reservations for your trip.

[ ] Notify the State Motor Vehicle Bureau of your new address.

Three weeks before you move:

[ ] Arrange to have gas, electric, telephone, cable TV disconnected in your present home and connected in your new home.

[ ] Make arrangements for child care on moving day.

[ ] If necessary, reserve apartment elevator for pickup and/or delivery dates.

Two weeks before you move:

[ ] Dispose of all items too dangerous to move, including flammable liquids.

[ ] Have your car serviced and ready for the trip.

One week before you move:

[ ] Have enough medications to last two weeks in your new home. Have prescriptions forwarded to a pharmacy in your new community.

[ ] Arrange for newspaper and other delivery services to be discontinued.

[ ] Close or transfer bank accounts. Buy traveler's checks for the trip.

[ ] Make arrangements to pay for your move.

Three days before you move:

[ ] Withdraw contents from your safe-deposit box. Arrange to transport items yourself or have them sent by insured carrier service.

[ ] Remove anything from drawers that might spill, break or stain.

Two days before you move:

[ ] Have mover pack your goods.

One day before you move:

[ ] Defrost and dry refrigerator and freezer.

[ ] Set aside valuable items you are taking with you.

Moving day:

[ ] Be on hand when driver arrives. Stay until the moving crew leaves.

[ ] Accompany the driver through your house as he inventories your goods.

[ ] Complete information on the bill of lading. Give the driver exact directions to your new home.

[ ] Tell the driver and the van line where you can be reached during the move.

[ ] Before the van leaves, walk through the house to make sure nothing has been overlooked.

[ ] Make sure you have your copies of the bill of lading and inventory.

Delivery day:

[ ] Meet driver at your new house. Supervise unloading and unpacking.

[ ] Check carefully for damaged or missing items. Make sure this information is written on your copy and on the driver's copy of the inventory.
